Modernization Milestone for Small Boat Community

February 26, 2010

Guest post from RDML Tom Ostebo, Assistant Commandant for Engineering and Logistics (CG-4):

I am very pleased to report that the Logistics Transformation effort reached a significant milestone this week: 50 percent of all Coast Guard small boat stations and the units that support them are now operating under the new Mission Support Business Model. To be exact, 19 Sectors, 426 small boats and 174 units are now operating under the new support model.

What's most exciting is that we continue to hear from transformed units that the new model works and that transformation is absolutely the right thing for the Coast Guard. The Small Boat Product Line (SBPL) continues to experience success in the form of increased operational availability, reliability, and safety as well as cost avoidance discoveries. The SBPL has documented numerous examples of improving mission support to the fleet through resolution of operational degraders and cost drivers. While we still have much work to do and many areas to improve, this is a great start to a long but worthwhile journey.

Reaching the half-way mark is a great accomplishment. Bravo Zulu to all of you who have paved the way and made this happen. Please continue your superb efforts. Your support and endorsement of logistics transformation is vital to completing this essential element of Coast Guard Modernization and to foster continuous organizational improvement.

I invite you to read CDR Tamara Koermer's post on the DCMS log for more information about this milestone.
