U.S. continues to rush relief to Pakistan

As monsoon rains continue to fall on Pakistan, U.S. officials are sending aid as fast as the flood-stricken country can absorb it, a Defense Department official said here Aug. 18.

U.N. officials estimate that some 20 million Pakistanis are affected, with about 1,500 dead, as the Indus River and its tributaries continue to rise.

U.S. officials have provided more than $90 million in support since the flooding began July 29, said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. All relief aid is at the request of and through the Pakistani government, as U.S. servicemembers in Pakistan work to deliver aid under direction of Pakistani officials at the Natural Disaster Management Authority based in Rawalpindi.

Joint Base hosts Eagle Flag exercise, Soldiers and Airmen practice port opening

Members of the Kentucky Air National Guard's Contingency Response Group mobilized here July 26 as part of joint exercise Eagle Flag 10-3, which simulates a deployment in support of humanitarian relief efforts.

This year's Eagle Flag exercise included members from the Army and Air Force, both active-duty and Reserve components, who came together to form the Joint Task Force-Port Opening.

There were 147 servicemembers participating in the exercise, including 82 Kentucky guardsmen from the 123rd CRG; 50 Soldiers from the Army's 689th Rapid Port Opening Element; 10 Airmen from the 621st Contingency Response Wing; three members of the New Jersey Air National Guard's 108th CRG; and two civilians from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

CMSAF visits Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, emphasizes family, professional development

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Roy met with Airmen here July 30 and discussed his focus areas.

His tour of JB Hickam was part of a larger Pacific tour to neighboring countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia.

"It's great to be back here to see the Airmen and what they're doing, and to tell them how important they are to the overall effect our Airmen are having on the battle space," said Chief Roy, who previously served as the senior enlisted leader and adviser for U.S. Pacific Command at nearby Camp H.M. Smith.

Reserve medics treat 8,000 patients in Dominican Republic

Thirty-eight Air Force Reserve medics with the 512th Aerospace Medicine Squadron here provided free medical care to 8,363 patients as part of a Medical Readiness Training Exercise in the Dominican Republic July 10 through 24.

The 512th Airlift Wing Airmen, as well as other reservists from around the country, worked with a team of doctors and nurses from the Dominican military to provide free medical care to the citizens of Constanza, a central-mountain town with a population of 42,000.

Gates, Mullen urge participation in survey

Noting the importance of getting the opinions of those who would be most affected by a possible repeal of the so-called "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, urged servicemembers to provide their input July 8.

About 400,000 servicemembers are receiving an e-mail survey seeking their opinions, and the department has an online inbox at https://dadt.csd.disa.mil/ for additional feedback from common access card holders.

Big Idea: Civilian employee awarded $10,000 for developing cost saving measure

On June 28, Rick Griebel received the biggest check of his life, literally. The check, which was more than 3.5 feet long, was written for $10,000 and signed by Lt. Gen. Vern M. "Rusty" Findley II, the Air Mobility Command vice commander.

Mr. Griebel was awarded the incentive check through the Air Force Innovative Development through Employee Awareness Program for an initiative estimated to save AMC more than $2 million during the next 15 years.

The IDEA Program is an incentive program that recognizes submitters for their approved ideas that benefit the Air Force through streamlined processes, improved productivity and cost savings. Approved initiatives that generate tangible savings for the Air Force often result in awards to individuals credited with ownership of the idea. Idea owners may be eligible for cash awards ranging from $200 to $10,000, based on validated first year savings.

Security forces Airmen teach English to Panamanian hosts

Two bilingual security forces Airmen assigned to New Horizons Panama 2010 are spending their free time in front of a black board teaching English classes to members of the Panamanian Frontier Police (SENAFRONT).

Master Sgt. Noland Rivera and Senior Airman Sheryl Job started out teaching a few words in English to SENAFRONT members at the six New Horizons construction sites to make communication easier, but are now teaching classes twice a week for up to two hours.

"For me, the classes are very good," said SENAFRONT First Sgt. Luis Quintero, the 1st Brigade Headquarters operations NCO, through an interpreter. "From the beginning, I practiced English with Sergeant Rivera so we could coordinate security. Then, I went out on my own and found a study book, which led me to ask for a class for the rest of the staff.

AMC officials unveil concept to strengthen force resilience

"Each of us has a flame inside of us that, when made stronger, can help us withstand life's storms," said Gen. Raymond E. Johns Jr., the commander of Air Mobility Command  June 16 .

To strengthen force resilience, including Air Force civilians and family members, AMC officials launched the Comprehensive Airman Fitness concept July 1 as a new approach to taking care of oneself and others.

"Comprehensive Airman Fitness is not a program, but an approach to better equip you to handle stress," General Johns said. "It's important to survive. But I want you to be able to thrive."

‘Bad guys’ add realism to capabilities exercise

An Army Special Forces team jumped out of an MC-130W Combat Spear and deployed their parachutes to slowly descend to the landing zone. After hitting the hard New Mexico soil, they fanned out and moved toward their objective.

This began the scenario of the Cannon Air Force Base capabilities exercise that included Airmen, civilians, and family members here June 24.

Suddenly, all-terrain vehicles drove up a dirt road carrying a number of opposition forces members who fanned out and began shooting at the Special Forces team.

Defense Threat Reduction Agency Airman named language professional of the year

When Staff Sgt. Agne Mileviciute came to the U.S. from Lithuania in 1999, she knew exactly what she wanted to do: find a way to serve her new country.

Sergeant Mileviciute is a Russian interpreter and recently was honored as the Air Force Language Professional of the Year at the Command Language Program Seminar at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterrey, Calif.

An airborne cryptolinguist, Sergeant Mileviciute is assigned to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency at Fort Belvoir, Va.
